ABSTRACT

Abstract Dental age estimation is very important for individual identification in criminal and civil forensic investigations. One of the methods for age estimation is studying age related changes in pulp volume of teeth. The objective of the current study was to estimate dental age from the pulp volume of five different categories of teeth of a Peruvian sample using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Retrospective CBCT records of 231 patients (females (134), males (97), age: 12-60 years) were included in the study, categorized into five different age groups (12-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 years and older). Dental pulp volume of five categories of teeth(upper canines, left upper central incisors, left upper first molars, lower left first premolars, first molars) were analyzed using Romexis® 5.3.3.5 software for each patient. There was a reduction in the pulp volume of upper right and left canine with age. The Pulp volume was lowest in people aged 60 years and over. Linear regression analysis of the pulp volume and chronological age showed a coefficient of determination of 30%, suggesting a weak correlation. A weak correlation between dental pulp and age is derived. But, a robust large homogenous sample of teeth in future for different age groups may establish a reliable regression equation.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: Sex determination of unknown persons plays an important role in forensic science. As most bones used for sex determination are recovered in incomplete state, it is often necessary to use bones that are recovered intact e.g., the sphenoid sinus. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of sphenoid sinuses dimensions for sex determination using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images in Chinese adults. MRI images of 79 sphenoid sinuses (from 44 men and 35 women) were retrospectively selected. The height, anterior-posterior diameter, area, and perimeter were measured in the midsagittal view of the sphenoid sinuses. All data were subjected to descriptive and discriminative functional analysis with unpaired t-test and canonical discriminant. Comparison between male and female groups showed significant statistical differences regarding the height, anterior-posterior diameter, area, and perimeter of sphenoid sinuses. The predictive accuracy rate of the sphenoid sinus to identify sex was 63.6 % in males and 62.9 % in females with an overall accuracy of 63.3 %. This study proposed the importance of sexual dimorphism of sphenoid sinus dimensions, especially if other methods are not available. It suggested using MRI in forensics science thus obviating the complete dependence on the usage of conventional computed tomography (CT) and facilitating the study of forensic anatomy at the level of soft tissue.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the possibility of age and sex determination using bimastoid diameter with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). This retrospective study investigated 100 female and 100 male patients aged 18-83 years (mean age: 45.55±16.28 years). To measure bimastoid diameter, the appropriate image was chosen from sagittal, coronal, and axial images of CBCT in which the measurement points could be best detected. The distance between the points of the mastoid process was measured using three-dimensional coronal reconstruction. The mean bimastoid breadth was 106.12±6.22mm. The bimastoid diameter in male cases was higher than that in female cases (110.69±4.53mm vs. 101.65±4.00mm). There was no significant difference in bimastoid breadth with advancing age. For sex determination, morphometric measurements of bimastoid diameter ensured a high rate of dimorphism in the Turkish subpopulation. CBCT morphometric analysis may be reliable and convenient for evaluating sex and may be recommended to compare population data.

ABSTRACT

@#Xylazine is a sedative, analgesic and muscle relaxant widely applied in the veterinary field. However, owing to its depressant effect, xylazine has become a substance of abuse by humans. Misuse of xylazine not only triggers unwanted consequences (death), but also linked with various crimes. Google Scholar, PubMed and SciFinder were used to retrieve articles and case reports in relation to the misuses of xylazine and established analytical methods for forensic investigation until November 2021. Literatures reported the accidental and intended poisoning of xylazine, recreational use of xylazine and as an adulterant in recreational drugs. In addition to being a facilitator of crime and sexual assault, it is administered illegally to food producing animals as a sedative and to sports animals as a doping agent. Problems associated with the abuse of xylazine were highlighted in this review, covering the unknown prevalence of xylazine abuse and the need to revise the regulatory status of xylazine. In addition, limited screening and confirmatory methods that can be readily utilised to detect xylazine either alone or simultaneously with other substances of abuse, particularly useful for forensic toxicology and narcotic section were available in the literature. As a conventionally used veterinary drug, xylazine is undoubtedly a potentially hazardous drug, and the investigations on its potential abuse would enhance routine forensic examination to keep pace with the status of illicit drugs.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: Although molecular techniques evolved considerably in last years, anthropological methods of assessing skeletal remains, continues to be an important tool in the identification process in medico legal investigations. The objective of this study was to develop a discriminant function equation for estimating sex and stature using several measurements of lumbar vertebrae in a Thai population. We studied 150 lumbar columns (75 male and 75 female) age range of 22 to 89 years from the Forensic Osteology Research Center, Chiang Mai University, Thailand. The quantitative variables with sex were analyzed by the discriminant function analysis and that with stature were calculated using linear regression. The pixel density of the major axis of the trabecular surface of superior endplate of the first lumbar vertebra had the most accuracy in sex determination. The regression equation with quantitative variables in stature estimation described 32.3 % of the total variance with standard error of estimate of 7.736 cm. Lumbar vertebrae can be used as part of the stature and sex quantitatively and qualitatively estimating in Thais incomplete skeletal remains.

ABSTRACT

Age estimation is an important aspect In forensic investigations. Different methods in forensic odontology based on the correlation between age estimation in adults, from the analysis of the pulp/tooth area, based on the apposition of secondary dentine. The aim of the study was to develop regression models for the dental age estimation by the relation pulp/tooth area, in lower canines in a Chilean sample, using digital peri-apical radiographs (DPR) applying Cameriere's method. We analyzed 212 DPR (86 males and 126 females) mandibular canines through Image J program to measure the pulp/tooth area. Age and sex information was obtained of the DPR's blindly selected. We developed simple linear regression models for age estimation. The coefficient of determination to R33 was R2 age and dental structures have been described. Cameriere et al. proposed a quantitative method for 27.8 % and R2 29.6 % to R44, with a mean absolute error of 11.02 years, to R33 and 10.37 years to R44. ANOVA analysis showed no statistically significant differences for the pulp/tooth relation area of canines according to sex (p> 0.05). According to the results, the Cameriere's et al., method is reliable for dental age estimation according to pulp/tooth ratio in adults. However, in the regression models developed for Chilean population, it can be stated that the adjustment indicated by the coefficients of determination, show uncertainty between the pulp / tooth area and chronological age in lower canines, therefore it is suggested to use additional estimation methods for age in this population.

ABSTRACT

Dog bites are a known public health problem involving physical, mental and emotional traumas. From a forensic point of view, it has been stated that their morphological characters, and the intercanine and interincisive measurements, could allow a taxonomic and specific identification of the implicated animal. The aim of this study was to differentiate and identify the biological profile of a potential aggressor dog by analysing eight morphometric bite patterns belonging to three different dog breeds. The data obtained were analyzed following three categories: a) breeds; b) sexes among breeds; and c) sex within breed. Significant differences were detected among the variables (p≤ 0.05), but only the maximum maxillary intercanines width (MaxCW) allowed a breed differentiation. The other variables allowed a differentiation between two breeds or one breed over the others. The principal components analysis (PCA) allowed visualizing the degree of dispersion and relationship among the scores. It showed three well-defined and separated breed groups, and different degrees of dispersion within and among breeds. The most important variable for such a differentiation was MaxCW. When considering sex among breeds for males, it showed a statistically significant difference, but only the diastema located between the third left mandibular, incisive and the left mandibular canine (C-I-ManL) allowed breed differentiation. For females, only MaxCW allowed a differentiation among breeds. The multivariate analysis permitted with a 95 % confidence interval, a breed and sex differentiation. Besides, the PCA models allowed classifying, identifying, separating and graphically showing the relationship among the variables. This made it possible to differentiate between breeds and sexes. Due to the large range of dog breeds around the world, this multivariate analysis could also help determining the dog's weight and size, narrowing down towards an approximate number of offending dogs, focussing on a certain kind of dog breed, and pinpointing any suspect dog.

ABSTRACT

@#Craniofacial superimposition are used in cases where one has found an unknown human skull. The purpose of this research was to develop craniofacial superimposition by applying mathematical programme to increase the credibility of craniofacial superimposition in Thailand. To calculate the overlay position of face-real skull photo and face photo from the same owner were compared to the face-randomised skull photo and face photo. This study was carried out on a sample of 20 skulls, divided into 10 male skulls and 10 female skulls. All samples of bones were taken from the Forensic Osteology Research Center (FORC), Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University. Skull and face photography of the deceased took only the front-straight face position. The similarity was found out from edges of them that compared at important points with the mathematical programme, in which the researchers applied functions and mathematical principles of matrix and logical. In each individual experiment between face-real skull and face-randomised skull, the results were recorded and explained in the form of qualitative experiments. From the experiment found that the used programme can be able to correctly assess the similarity are 19 cases of 20 cases. Craniofacial superimposition can save the budget of DNA testing and can be screening for the initial assumption. This research will be able to facilitate, work faster, more reliable and save budget in the identifying process.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute-phase protein whose level increases in response to tissue injury, infection, or other inflammation. It is used in clinical and forensic settings. Point-of-care (POC) testing has recently become available, and it is considered to be useful during postmortem examinations. However, laboratory testing of postmortem blood samples is difficult due to hemolysis and postmortem clotting. METHODS: The utility of POC testing for CRP during postmortem examination was evaluated using cardiac blood from the inferior vena cava. The whole blood sample was immediately tested using the POC instrument. Subsequently, the same sample was processed to obtain the serum, which was tested using common laboratory instruments. RESULTS: The postmortem POC test had a high positive predictive value and specificity, and the results strongly correlated with the laboratory test results. CONCLUSION: POC CRP testing is valid in postmortem examination and can be used in forensic medicine (postmortem inspection and autopsy).

ABSTRACT

Age estimation from skeletal remains is an important step in forensic biological identification. The main objective of this study is to develop an age estimation equation for the Thai population from vertebral osteophytes. Each vertebra in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar segments was scored for degree of osteophyte formation. Classification was carried out in accordance with the criteria established by Snodgrass and Watanabe, and used a new modified score of the length of vertebral osteophyte for age estimation. The sample included 400 individuals (262 males, 138 females) ranging in age from 22 to 97 years. A sample of Thai vertebral columns was used, the columns being divided into the following groups of vertebrae: cervical (C2–C7), thoracic (T1–T12), and lumbar (L1–L5). Each vertebra was scored for the degree of osteophyte formation and the accumulated data was analyzed statistically. Correlation coefficients and R-squared from mean in lumbar vertebrae for females of criteria established by the method of Snodgrass and Watanabe, the new modified score by length of vertebral osteophytes were 0.801 and 0.642 (P<0.01); 0.755 and 0.57 (P<0.01); 0.786 and 0.618 (P<0.01), respectively. This study presents all 23 subcategories (C2–L5) of the vertebrae to apply in real situations, showing all age estimation equations for males, females and combined sexes of unknown sex. One application of this study is age estimation when dealing with forensic cases in the Thai population.

ABSTRACT

Necrobiome is the main factor causing the cadaver decomposition. Studying the microbial succession during decomposition is one of the main tasks of forensic microbiology. The interactive relationships among cadaver, environment and microorganisms are complicated. The microbial succession study relies on macroscopic monitoring of community composition and the diversity change in each decomposition stage. With the maturity and development of high-throughput sequencing (HTS), the structure and diversity of microbial communities in different environments have been successively revealed. A new breakthrough to explore the cadaveric microorganisms has been opened as well. It has become the research hotspots in forensic microbiology to reveal the microbial succession in the process of cadaver decomposition and to interpret the essence of various decomposition phenomena by using HTS, which can provide a new reference for postmortem interval (PMI) estimation. The present paper reviews studies on PMI estimation by using cadaveric microorganism. Problems and application prospects of forensic microbiology studies are discussed on the basis of the current application of HTS technology in the exploration of microbial succession.

ABSTRACT

Objective: describe the in vitro microscopic changes of dental amalgam test bodies subjected to high temperatures observed by scanning electron microscopy. Materials and methods: descriptive observational cross-sectional study of pseudo-experimental nature that analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) the in vitro behavior of 27 test bodies elaborated in three brands of dental amalgam (Contour® Kerr®, Admix® SDI® and Nu Alloy® Newstethic®) subjected to high temperatures (200ºC, 400ºC, 600ºC). Results: the three trademarks of dental amalgam used in this study had a similar behavior, except for the behavior of silver nodules. These appeared to 200ºC in the test bodies of Admix® SDI® and 400ºC in the test bodies of Contour® Kerr® and Nu Alloy® Newstethic®. The analysis of scanning electron microscopy and spectrophotometry at the surface of the test bodies showed the statistically significant increase (p<0.05) the percentage of atomic weight of mercury, copper and tin. Conclusions: the test bodies of the three trademarks of dental amalgam undergo changes in their microstructure so long as the temperature increases. The formation of silver nodules was explained as a consequence of the behavior of the gamma 1 phase silver-mercury with increasing temperature, which begins to dissociate at 200ºC in the test bodies of Admix® SDI® and 400ºC in the test bodies of Contour® Kerr® and Nu Alloy® Newstethic®.

ABSTRACT

@#Malaysia was ranked at 148 by World Health Organization (WHO) in suicide statistic for 2012, where males had a highertendency to commit suicide, recording a 4.7 per 100,000 in comparison to female (1.5 per 100,000). As hanging is one ofthe most common methods to commit suicide, this retrospective study was conducted to observe the incidence of suicideby hanging in Klang Valley from four different hospitals. The current study is conducted to provide local database ofsuicide occurrence by hanging in Klang Valley. A total of 893 suicide cases by hanging from 2007 to 2016 were recordedfrom post mortem records and analysed. Suicide rates in Klang Valley showed a rising trend from 2007 to 2016. Malesfrom age group 30 to 34 years old and females from 20 to 24 years old have the highest number of suicide fatalitiescompared to other age groups. Meanwhile, fatalities from the age group of 10 to 14 years old and 80 years old and aboveshowed similar result which is only 7%. 78% of the fatalities were recognized as Malaysian and half of them were Indian.Majority of the victims/cases (45%) who committed suicide by hanging are of Hindu religious denomination. Non-citizenin Malaysia that have the highest suicide rates were from Nepal, Indonesia and Myanmar. Victims also committed suicidemore during the day and the peak hours being at 12.00 pm to 5.59 pm.

ABSTRACT

This is the first application of forensic entomology in a case involving a human corpse found in the urban area of the Municipality of Florencia, Caquetá, Colombia, in the Piedemont of the Colombian Amazon. Three days after removing the body from the scene, pupae and puparia were collected and identified as Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann, 1819) (Diptera, Calliphoridae). The postmortem interval was estimated on the basis of previously published data and verified through accumulated degree hours (ADH) and intrapuparial development. The estimated minimum postmortem interval was of 229 hours (9.5 days).
